The northern Lakes: Derwentwater, Ullswater and the Eden Valley
Keswick is the market town at the heart of the northern Lakes, sitting at the top of Derwentwater beneath Skiddaw, with the ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle on the hill just outside town and Borrowdale stretching away to the south. Over the Matterdale fells lies Ullswater, a long, winding lake with Pooley Bridge at one end, Glenridding at the other and the Aira Force waterfall along its western shore. To the east, the red sandstone market town of Penrith looks out over the Eden Valley towards the Pennines.
Weddings here tend to be relaxed but grand in scale: historic hotels with lake frontage, country houses with formal gardens and barns where the sky feels enormous. Plenty of couples bring everyone together for a whole weekend, which makes the evening reception the moment the whole group really lets go.

Our team has worked at each of the venues below. They show just how varied the northern Lakes are, from waterfall to deer park to valley barn.
- Lodore Falls Hotel, Borrowdale. A few miles south of Keswick on the eastern shore of Derwentwater, right in front of the waterfall made famous by Robert Southey’s poem. Lake views reach across to Cat Bells, with the Surprise View viewpoint close by, and there’s a honeymoon suite for the two of you.
- Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa, Bassenthwaite. A luxury hotel and spa with 43 individually designed rooms on the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake, between the water and the Skiddaw range. The hall says it was one of the first places in Cumbria licensed for civil ceremonies.
- Inn on the Lake, Glenridding. Once known as the Ullswater Hotel, it now has an Orangery looking over the lake and fells, a Lake View Lounge and a terrace, with the Ramblers Bar, a traditional Lakeland pub, right next door.
- Askham Hall, near Penrith. Home to the Lowther family for around three centuries, it opened as a country house hotel and wedding venue in 2013. Its kitchen garden supplies the hall’s restaurant, Allium, and the restored Bank Barn hosts celebrations.
- Eden Barn, Kirkby Stephen. Further up the Eden Valley, a family-run barn with an undercover terrace looking out to the Pennines and two licensed outdoor ceremony spots: a handcrafted pavilion and a meadow beside a stream.

The Glam Booth is our Kardashian-style photo booth, the one to pick for a Keswick wedding with a touch of glamour: a white backdrop, beauty lighting and black and white portraits that flatter everyone. It complements grand hotel rooms beautifully. From £650.

For barns and garden marquees, our Vintage Booth is a hand-crafted solid oak open booth with a choice of backdrops, from £625. Vintage clients can upgrade to the Glam Booth for just £25.

Things to think about before you book
Couples usually secure us 12 to 24 months ahead, and that’s especially worth doing if your venue only takes one wedding a day. A booking fee holds the date and the balance is due 14 days before. When you get in touch, share your venue and rough timings: we arrive an hour before the booth opens, so knowing when the evening room is free helps us plan. If you’re expecting lots of guests at a lakeside hotel, three hours plus an extra hour gives everyone time for a photo without rushing.

Wayne on the night of our wedding was brilliant, super friendly & arrived in plenty of time for the start of the evening celebrations! We also added late to our booking an audio guestbook, which was no trouble and brilliant to use! Listening back to the messages has been a real highlight. selfie star made our wedding!! run by two of the nicest people we have ever met, Wayne and sal went above and beyond for us to make our special day run as smoothly as possible. They even took all the stress away before hand and communicated with the hotel about arranging the room and making sure everything we had hired from them would fit, they contacted the tribute band we had coming to the wedding and made their set up easier by connect up to selfie stars equipment which made our turn around from the day in to the evening party much quicker! The dancefloor, star light back drop and light up shoots completely transformed our room, it looked amazing!! we also had the dancing with clouds and cold spark fire work for our first dance which was also looked amazing! selfie star also hosted our full day and was our DJ Which I believe made the day run so well. They made us feel very special and organised all the special parts of the day to make sure they went as well as they possibly could and really made the special moments count! THe music was brilliant they played a mixture of songs we asked for and then a mixture of songs from 80s 90s and now which was great the dancefloor was full of people all night! highly recommended this company they are fantastic, we also had the table selfie centerpiece aswell which we and all our guests had lots of fun with and captured loads of memories! We booked Selfie Star Photo Booth for our wedding and honestly it was one of the best investments we made. We went for the Kardashian filter to match our monochrome wedding theme and it looked incredible — the photos came out so stylish and elevated. Our guests absolutely loved it and were using it all night. The fact guests could have unlimited prints was amazing, and every print strip was personalised with our Mr & Mrs name and wedding date, with 3 photos on each print which looked so professional. Sally also shared a download link afterwards with all of the images, which was such a lovely touch. One of our favourite parts was coming home with a beautiful gift box containing copies of all the prints for us to add into our guest book and keep forever. Sally was fantastic throughout and everything ran so smoothly. We couldn’t recommend Selfie Star enough!
we loved our photo booth for our wedding last month. Not only did we hire that from Selfie Star, we hired the DJ, venue uplighting and sparkler fountains. Wayne and Sally was very accommodating for our need after we had to change a few things and move our timeline forward which wasn't too much hassel for them. would 100000% recommend to anyone looking for entertainment for their special event. we also want to wish Wayne and Sally all the best in their business . We met Sally and Wayne at a wedding fair and hiring them was the best decision ever ( despite already having a DJ provided within our wedding package at Aldwark Manor) we knew it would be an extra cost but we were willing to do this as we wanted Wayne as our DJ , and he was worth every penny, he made our wedding exactly what we wanted he listened to our preferences and tailored the music to our taste. The guests absolutely loved him. He also helped organise the dance floor which I wanted and provided letters. Sally on the photobooth was equally amazing, guests had such a laugh and kept Sally busy. Definitely a must have at any party. The added bonus of us receiving a copy of every photo taken that night and placed in a box was simply brilliant myself and my husband were able to look through these at our leisure and have a good giggle. So a massive thank you to both Sally & Wayne and if your looking for a top class DJ and photo booth look no further we highly recommend these guys they are the best.
What a cracking experience we had at a wedding yesterday with Selfie Star! Overall a friendly, humorous but professional service! Absolutely amazing DJ and photobooth service for our wedding! Communication beforehand was excellent and they made everything so easy and stress-free from start to finish. They arrived punctually, were incredibly professional, and did everything we asked for with no problem at all. The DJ kept the dancefloor full all night and was also a fantastic MC, helping the whole evening run smoothly and keeping the atmosphere lively and fun. The photobooth was such a hit with all our wedding guests too!
