About York Racecourse and the Knavesmire
York Racecourse lies on the Knavesmire, an open expanse of land in the south-west of the city. Racing is believed to have taken place on the current site since 1731, and part of the grandstand designed by the architect John Carr, completed in 1754, still survives. The course’s Ebor Festival each August is the highlight of its racing year.
Away from race days, the racecourse is a busy events venue, with a collection of suites set within 150 acres of parkland. Some of the facts that matter when you are planning an event:
- Weddings: the venue is licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships, and its wedding brochure highlights a top-floor outdoor balcony with views towards York Minster.
- Event spaces: named spaces include the Gimcrack Suite, the Dante Suite, the Ebor Restaurant, the Melrose Club Lounge and private boxes in the Knavesmire Stand.
- Evening receptions: the racecourse notes staging suited to a band or DJ, with tables cleared for dancing.
- Business events: it is also a major conference and corporate hospitality venue, with free on-site parking.

Wedding DJ and photo booth in York
With staging ready for a DJ, it makes sense to book your music and booth together. Our sister company EventsDJ provides wedding and party DJs, and our Wedding DJ & Photo Booth package saves you money compared with booking separately. The Evening DJ package covers 5 hours, and party and Christmas DJ packages are £450. Cold spark fountains and a sax player are available as add-ons. Planning tips for a photo booth at York Racecourse
Confirm your suite. The racecourse has several event spaces. Once you know which one is yours, ask the events team where the booth should go – usually near the dance floor or bar.
Mind the race calendar. The brochure notes that summer Saturdays can be in demand. Check your date with the venue first, then with us.
For corporate events, plan the branding. Send us your logo and brand colours early so we can create a print design that matches your event materials.
Get timings right. For weddings, open the booth with the evening reception. For corporate dinners, opening after the meal or awards keeps it busy.
Book early. Couples usually book 12–24 months ahead. A booking fee secures the date and the balance is due 14 days before.

selfie star made our wedding!! run by two of the nicest people we have ever met, Wayne and sal went above and beyond for us to make our special day run as smoothly as possible. They even took all the stress away before hand and communicated with the hotel about arranging the room and making sure everything we had hired from them would fit, they contacted the tribute band we had coming to the wedding and made their set up easier by connect up to selfie stars equipment which made our turn around from the day in to the evening party much quicker! The dancefloor, star light back drop and light up shoots completely transformed our room, it looked amazing!! we also had the dancing with clouds and cold spark fire work for our first dance which was also looked amazing! selfie star also hosted our full day and was our DJ Which I believe made the day run so well. They made us feel very special and organised all the special parts of the day to make sure they went as well as they possibly could and really made the special moments count! THe music was brilliant they played a mixture of songs we asked for and then a mixture of songs from 80s 90s and now which was great the dancefloor was full of people all night! highly recommended this company they are fantastic, we also had the table selfie centerpiece aswell which we and all our guests had lots of fun with and captured loads of memories! We met Sally and Wayne at a wedding fair and hiring them was the best decision ever ( despite already having a DJ provided within our wedding package at Aldwark Manor) we knew it would be an extra cost but we were willing to do this as we wanted Wayne as our DJ , and he was worth every penny, he made our wedding exactly what we wanted he listened to our preferences and tailored the music to our taste. The guests absolutely loved him. He also helped organise the dance floor which I wanted and provided letters. Sally on the photobooth was equally amazing, guests had such a laugh and kept Sally busy. Definitely a must have at any party. The added bonus of us receiving a copy of every photo taken that night and placed in a box was simply brilliant myself and my husband were able to look through these at our leisure and have a good giggle. Absolutely amazing DJ and photobooth service for our wedding! Communication beforehand was excellent and they made everything so easy and stress-free from start to finish. They arrived punctually, were incredibly professional, and did everything we asked for with no problem at all. The DJ kept the dancefloor full all night and was also a fantastic MC, helping the whole evening run smoothly and keeping the atmosphere lively and fun. The photobooth was such a hit with all our wedding guests too! We couldn’t have asked for better entertainment for our special day and would highly recommend them to anyone planning a wedding or event.
We booked Selfie Star Photo Booth for our wedding and honestly it was one of the best investments we made. We went for the Kardashian filter to match our monochrome wedding theme and it looked incredible — the photos came out so stylish and elevated. Our guests absolutely loved it and were using it all night. The fact guests could have unlimited prints was amazing, and every print strip was personalised with our Mr & Mrs name and wedding date, with 3 photos on each print which looked so professional. Sally also shared a download link afterwards with all of the images, which was such a lovely touch. One of our favourite parts was coming home with a beautiful gift box containing copies of all the prints for us to add into our guest book and keep forever.
